Here are my predictions for the American Football Conference in the upcoming 2011 NFL season:
AFC East: New England Patriots
Yes, the Jets made strides last season, but its always hard to bet against the Pats. They have consistently performed well, and with Brady and Belichick, this team has always had what it takes to win the Super Bowl each year. Whichever team doesn't win the AFC East is pretty much guaranteed a wild card spot, however.
AFC South: Houston Texans
This is essentially a 2-team race between the Texans and the Colts, and with questions about Peyton Manning's health, I'm going with the Texans. They made some key offseason additions on defense, namely CB Johnathan Joseph, and they have looked solid in their first couple of preseason games. They have always possessed the offensive firepower, and with an improved defense this year, it looks like the Texans' year has finally arrived.
AFC North: Pittsburgh Steelers
Again, this division looks to be a 2-team race between the Ravens and the Steelers. Both teams are very good, but I've got to give the edge to the Steelers. The Ravens lost too many key members of their team this offseason (Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, Kelly Gregg) and I believe their offense will not be as good as that of last year. The Steelers are the defending AFC champs, and are my pick to win the AFC North.
AFC West: San Diego Chargers
A perennial favorite that always seems to underperform, the Chargers look like the logical choice to win the West. The Broncos need to figure out their quarterback situation, and the Chiefs and Raiders figure to be .500 teams at most. The Chargers, with their talented offense and passable defense along with their revamped special teams under Coach Rich Bisaccia, are my choice for the AFC West.
Wild Card: New York Jets
As I said earlier, this wild card spot will go to whichever team finishes second in the AFC East, and right now, that looks to be the Jets. They missed out on the Asomugha sweepstakes, but return a solid offense and defense. Look for them to be a dark horse in the playoffs.
Wild Card: Indianapolis Colts
To me, this was a toss-up between the Colts and the Ravens. Both teams are among the elite teams in the NFL, and ultimately both will battle for this wild card spot. However, there is only one Peyton Manning in this league and he happens to be on the Colts.
